The annual Gold Nugget Awards were presented as the grand finale to the PCBC conference that we attended here in San Diego last week. Now in their 54th year, the awards represent the best of architecture, design and community development in California and beyond. Here are some award highlights from my perspective, as both a Canadian/Australian citizen and as CEO of an onsite water recycling company.
Standout Design – Pistachio Grove, Merced
I’m no architect, but I know what I like when I see it, and this home by R. Douglas Mansfield Architects ticks all the boxes for me. Not only does it have a modern aesthetic, and features like large outdoor living spaces that make living in California worth it, but it manages to balance understatement and grandeur and quirky fun in a small package. This is how homes in California should be built.
Local Favorite – West Cedar Street Cafe, San Diego
Lofty Coffee has been an integral part of my life since relocating to San Diego from Australia two-and-a-half years ago. In North County, this was the first California “flat white” that I found – nothing like the Australian version, but tasty and highly caffeinated nonetheless. Their newest location has opened up a new area of Little Italy and, most importantly, brought the zucchini cranberry muffins within striking distance now that I’ve moved to Ocean Beach.
Wellness Within Your Walls
After 6 years of drought, and a supremely wet winter, the industry is understandably quiet on sustainability initiatives in 2017. One exception, however, was the ABC Green Home 3.0 project. In addition to a variety of sustainability initiatives, LEED Platinum certification, and Net Zero design, the home introduces Wellness Within Your Walls (WWYW) certification in the California market.
This was a list of my top 3, but I would be remiss if I didn't give a salute to all of this year's participants. As the industry continues to recover, grow and modernize the Nexus team and I look forward to working with the visionary builders, developers and architects like those represented in the Gold Nugget Awards.
